According to Gartner, "ESP (Event Stream Processing) platforms are essential components in many new systems that provide continuous intelligence, enhanced situation awareness, and faster, more-precise business decisions."

Key Findings

  • Event stream processing (ESP) platforms are a prominent example of software that is used to process streaming data in real time. Organizations also use custom code; commercial SaaS or packaged applications; stream-enabled DBMSs; stream data integration (SDI) tools; unified real-time platforms; or analytics and BI (ABI) platforms for other kinds of real-time streaming.
  • Approximately two-thirds of the use of ESP platforms is to support real-time operational applications. The other one-third is used for ingesting, transforming and storing streaming data for subsequent analytics applications.
  • User organizations acquire ESP platforms as part of other software products in the majority of cases rather than as independent purchases. Vendors embed them within some SDI tools, customer engagement platforms, supply chain management tools, AIOps platforms, unified real-time platforms and other products.
