Versioning and Support Lifecycle
GridGain releases new versions on a regular basis following a Major.Minor.Maintenance-suffix naming convention.
-
Major Releases - represent major product changes, some of which are not backward-compatible (the jump from 7.6 to 8.7 for example). Rolling Upgrades for Enterprise and Ultimate Editions are not supported for major versions changes and assume a special upgrade procedure for production clusters. There is no particular release schedule for major versions.
-
Minor Releases - introduce new features and significant improvements. Thus, these releases are also called Feature Releases. For instance, 8.4, 8.5, and 8.7 are examples of minor versions of series 8. Rolling Upgrades are supported for all minor releases unless there are any breaking changes. If Rolling Upgrades are not supported between two specific versions then GridGain provides a migration path that eliminates downtime via a transitioning version. Usually, feature versions are released every 3 to 6 months.
-
Maintenance Releases - are used to deliver bug fixes, security patches, and performance optimizations. For instance, 8.7.3, 8.7.4, and 8.7.5 are examples of maintenance versions of series 8.7. Rolling Upgrades are supported similarly to minor releases as described above. Upgrades between maintenance versions of different minor series (for example, from 8.5.6 to 8.7.5) are supported as well unless there are any breaking changes. Usually, public maintenance versions are released once a month.
Some of the releases may include a -suffix in the version name which can be one of the following:
| Suffix | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
-betaN |
A beta version of an upcoming major or minor release where N is a beta number. This version can be used for development purposes only. Support SLAs are not applicable. Rolling upgrades are not supported. Any new APIs introduced in the beta versions are subject to change prior to a release candidate or general availability version. |
8.8.0-beta1 9.0.0-beta1, 9.0.0-beta2 |
-rcN |
A release candidate (RC) version of an upcoming major or minor release where N is an RC number. This version has all of the major changes finalized and tested, and can be used for advanced testing on the user/customer end. Support SLAs are not applicable. Rolling upgrades are not supported. |
8.8.0-rc1 9.0.0-rc1 |
-pN |
A private patch release that can be delivered to a customer according to contractual details. All the support SLAs are applied to the following releases and Rolling Upgrades are supported. |
8.5.5-p2 |
-sts |
A short-term support (STS) release. Used for particular major and minor versions series. See the Long Term and Short Term Support Releases section below for more details. |
9.0.0-STS, 9.0.1-STS, 9.0.2-STS 9.2.0-STS |
Long Term and Short Term Support Releases
GridGain distinguishes two types of major and minor releases in terms of maintenance and support: Short Term and Long Term.
Long Term Support (LTS) releases are fully supported by GridGain for 2 years from the time of the release of the first major or minor version. If a release version does not include the "-sts" suffix then it is an LTS release. For instance, 8.5 and 8.7 are examples of LTS series.
Short Term Support (STS) releases are supported for a shorter period of time, usually 6 months to 1 year.
STS releases introduce new and experimental features earlier and are labeled with the "-sts" suffix (for instance, 9.0.0-sts).
Regardless of the shorter support window, these releases are production ready and Rolling Upgrades will be supported from the current STS to the next LTS version.
Once the next LTS version is available, GridGain will publish a deprecation notice for the current STS release, if there is one. After that, the LTS version will be fully supported by GridGain for the next 3 months. The notice is shared with the existing GridGain customer via a special channel on the support portal and the date of the notice is recorded here on this page in the list of the existing releases below.
LTS versions are never deprecated by GridGain explicitly and are always supported for 2 years after the time of the first major or minor version release.
Support Lifecycle
| Description | Guarantees |
|---|---|
Beta |
Support SLAs are not applicable. |
Release Candidate (RC) |
Support SLAs are not applicable. |
Full Support |
Full support for GridGain versions lasts for 2 years, with the exception of Short Term Support (STS) versions that are supported from 6 months up to 1 year. |
End of Life (EOS) |
Version is no longer supported. Workloads running on these versions receive no bug fixes, patches, or maintenance releases. GridGain can continue answering questions related to EOS versions but the scope of support is limited and might come at a premium cost. Customers are recommended to migrate off of EOS versions. The end-of-life date is announced and published on this page at release time. |
Deprecated |
Applies to only Short Term Support (STS) releases that were officially deprecated and will be fully supported by GridGain for the next 3 months from the time of a deprecation notice. |
